In some cases, it is difficult to predict when an accident might occur. Because of this lack of predictability, most drivers take safety measures in an attempt to prevent an accident. However, police in Wisconsin believe that a driver purposely caused a car accident that resulted in the death of a young woman.
The accident happened in late June. Witnesses say that they saw a westbound car cut sharply across several lanes of traffic before striking a median. After turning multiple times, the car came to a stop on the eastbound shoulder of the interstate. Both occupants were ejected, including a 20-year-old woman who died minutes after the crash occurred.
The driver of the vehicle, the deceased woman's boyfriend, claims that they were arguing when the car drifted over the fog line before crossing traffic and crashing. However, reports indicate that police recovered dash cam footage from the driver's personal belongings. The camera reportedly shows the driver threatening to crash the car just prior to the fatal collision. In early October, a judge issued a warrant for his arrest after he was charged with reckless homicide.
It is the role of police and the criminal justice system to determine what charges are appropriate after a car accident such as this. However, the surviving family members of the deceased woman can also seek justice. A successfully presented wrongful death lawsuit filed in a Wisconsin civil court could not only provide the woman's loved ones with closure but could also provide them with a monetary award that will help them cope with the financial consequences of her death.
