For many people is Wisconsin, a car is simply a means of transportation. For some, however, it is much more, including a hobby and a point of pride. While most people who own a sports car, for example, are extremely safe drivers, some people may be unable to avoid the temptation of pushing the car to its limits. However, disobeying speed limits could lead to tragedy, as shown by a recent fatal car accident that police say may have been caused by a speed.
The single-vehicle accident occurred one afternoon in early April. Police say that the 56-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle. As a result, the vehicle struck a ditch before rolling over. A 52-year-old passenger in the vehicle was ejected in the course of the accident and died at the scene. The driver was transported to the hospital for treatment, but the severity of his injuries and current condition is unclear.
The accident remains under investigation. Police have said that while speed is suspected of contributing to the tragedy, drugs and alcohol are not. However, toxicology results have not been received.
While Wisconsin authorities are working to determine what criminal charges, if any, may be appropriate, the family of the deceased victim are left grieving the loss of their loved one. Many who have experienced an unexpected loss such as this have also struggled with the financial consequences, including loss of wages and funeral expenses. If it can be proved in a civil court claim that the car accident was caused by the driver’s negligence, the victim’s family could receive a monetary award to help cope with these damages, among others.
