The potential consequences of driving under the influence are well known. Unfortunately, there are those in Wisconsin who continue to make the decision to drive while intoxicated, often with tragic consequences. In fact, police believe a recent fatal auto accident that killed a pedestrian was caused by a man who was under the influence of alcohol.
The incident happened one afternoon on a day in November. Police claim that the 37-year-old victim was walking in a park when he was struck by a vehicle. The vehicle, allegedly driven by a 71-year-old man, also struck a utility pole and a vehicle. The victim died at the scene.
The driver who is believed to have caused the accident suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized. Reports indicate that the man is suspected of driving while intoxicated. It is also believed that the man was driving well over the posted speed limit at the time. He is expected to be formally charged once he is released from the hospital. He was also arrested in October for operating while intoxicated although he had yet to appear in court.
It may be easy for some people to dismiss the consequences of a potentially reckless decision. Unfortunately, when those decisions include driving under the influence of alcohol, innocent people may ultimately pay with their lives. In this case, a man in Wisconsin lost his life. If it can be proved that the accident was caused by the driver’s negligence, his family could receive a monetary award that will help them cope with the financial fallout of his death.
