As another boating season gets underway in Wisconsin, it’s important to remember the importance of having sufficient personal flotation devices (PFDs) – more commonly known as life jackets – on every boat.
Further, recreational watercraft are required under Wisconsin law and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) regulations to carry enough PFDs for all people on board. They must be accessible to the passengers and USCG-approved.
Why the wrong size PFD can be dangerous
While only children 13 and under are required to wear a PFD, everyone on board should wear one. That’s why it’s important for boat owners to have the appropriate size PFDs available for adults and children, and they need to be in good condition.
If a child or someone small is wearing a PFD that’s too big for them, it could move around if they’re thrown into the water and even cover their face, which could cause breathing issues and disorientation. If someone’s wearing a PFD that’s too small for them, it may not keep them above water.
The leading cause of death by far among recreational boaters is drowning, according to the USCG. In the vast majority of cases, the victims weren’t wearing PFDs.
Being a good swimmer is no guarantee against drowning
Even those who are experienced swimmers can be knocked unconscious by the boat or a piece of equipment on it if they go overboard. They could become disoriented in the water – especially if they’ve been drinking or have drugs (even prescription or over-the-counter drugs) in their system.
Anyone who has been injured or has lost a loved one to a boating accident because the boat owner didn’t have the appropriate PFDs on board or because the operator of the boat was negligent, reckless and/or under the influence can and should explore their options for holding the appropriate party(ies) liable.
